HVEM: The Baseballs (GER)
HVOR: Sentrum Scene, Oslo NÅR: Lørdag 2. oktober 2010
What a sad night for rockabilly it was, to have the packed house and all their fans, getting the impression that this out-watered cheap doo-wop sound is being labeled rockabilly. Its definetely not though their 4-piece band at times can be close at certain sections. Even the good part, the doo-wop section failed when they tried to make a new song out of Dions "I Wonder Why". The missing of real black doo-wop sung by people who actually have a dynamic in their voices felt huge! The Baseballs sounded more like the light and wanna-be version or the lighter Grease-version of real rocknroll, but hey.... thats what the majority want right...?? as theyll never know any better with these good-looking studs around. Thats what this band is all about and as the rest of the commercial music-industry today...- first the looks to get 90% of the audience going wet in their panties, and then we might get something that sounds like rocknroll or has certain links to real rocknroll. Their band can actually play and rock if they want to and the best part they got to the chance to show it, was when the singers were out to switch their plastic James Dean-look into their casual western-shirts. What a waste to spill good musicians on copycat crap like this. Hopefully the good part will come with their fans looking into what rockabilly actually sound like. Especially you would think journalists and promoters by now would know better after 56 years of rockabilly history and new bands on the scene all the time, but as long as Grease still is out there in peoples minds, I guess we just have to live with the misunderstanding of 50s looks and the fashion that goes around today, always will be linked to rockabilly music. To people like me who has been on the scene awhile its hard to tell how deep these fashion-people are interested in the music. Usually they dont know shit apart from names like Elvis and now the Baseballs. On the other hand, I dont think it will take long before we can get bit of fresh air back as I dont see this band lasting very long if they dont come up with some original material soon. Its limited in how many times you can milk the same cow without becoming outdated and a fade, but hey.... as long there is money to be made, ockabilly-culture will be exploited and this is not the first time around we are "back to the 50s" again. The Baseballs seems very much alike just another made up product from the music industry sung by performers you would think have had their drama-classes taken and got picked up by the local theater-school to make another story-musical about 50s teenage generation and rocknroll. Are the curtains to their real annoying show ready to be closed soon? So perhaps some Baseballs fans will be led to check out what rockabilly actually is? I sure hope so!
This sums up pretty much the feeling I had leaving the venue last night: |
